It is highly important for Cyprus to be aligned with EU policy regarding the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions of power generation. It is therefore expected for Cyprus to experience considerable growth in the development of Renewable Energy Sources (“RES”), in the coming years given the impending liberalization of the electricity market. In the course of power generation mix on the island, renewable energy technologies contributed to approximately 11.7% (340 MW) in 2020 of the electricity generated that year. Cyprus plans to double the share of renewable energy sources (23%) in the period 2021-2030 while according to Cyprus Renewable Energy Roadmap (CERA), the island will be able to produce 25% to 40% of its total electricity coming from solar power by 2030.
